BOSTON, Mass. — On Monday, April 21, athletes from across the globe will gather in Hopkinton to compete in the 129th Boston Marathon, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious races. This year’s event coincides with the 250th anniversary of Patriots Day, adding historical significance to the already celebrated marathon.

The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) reports that the race will see participation from residents of all 50 states, Washington D.C., and 118 countries, showcasing a diverse athlete pool. Last year’s champions, Sisay Lemma of Ethiopia and Hellen Obiri of Kenya, are set to defend their titles against an impressive field of runners, including American elites such as Emma Bates and Colin Bennie.

In addition to the marathon, the city will host several events in the lead-up to race day. The three-day Boston Marathon Expo will run from April 18-20 at the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center, featuring vendors, sponsor exhibits, and photo opportunities, and will welcome all attendees free of charge.

The BAA has provided details for race day logistics, recommending runners use official buses departing from Boston Common beginning at 6:45 a.m. All participants must present their bib number for boarding, with the last bus leaving at 9:30 a.m. Accessible transportation will also be available for runners with disabilities from the Sheraton Boston Hotel starting at 5 a.m.

The marathon’s course begins at Main Street in Hopkinton and traverses various towns including Ashland, Framingham, and Wellesley, before entering Boston. Runners will experience a challenging route with notable landmarks and community support, culminating at Copley Square.

The race schedule is as follows: Men’s wheelchair at 9:06 a.m., Women’s wheelchair at 9:09 a.m., Professional men at 9:37 a.m., Professional women at 9:47 a.m., Para athletics at 9:50 a.m., followed by four waves of amateur runners beginning at 10 a.m. The finish line will close at 5:30 p.m.

Additionally, the Boston Marathon will be broadcast on multiple platforms. Local viewers can tune in to WCVB Channel 5 from 4 a.m., with coverage of professional races commencing at 9 a.m. The broadcast will be available on the WCVB website and app, allowing access through smart devices as well.

While cheering fans gather along the course, restaurants and bars across the city will embrace the marathon spirit with viewing parties and specials. Notably, the historic Fenway Park will host a Red Sox game against the Chicago White Sox, further energizing the festive atmosphere for Marathon Monday.

As communities come together in celebration, Boston residents and visitors alike will enjoy a day filled with athleticism, camaraderie, and spirit, underlining the marathon’s significance in the fabric of the city.
