Boston Marathon Qualifiers Running Hopkinton To Copley Square

BOSTON, Mass. — The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) is expecting a surge of participation in the 2025 Boston Marathon, with a record number of qualifier applications received. This year, the iconic race will stretch from Hopkinton to Copley Square, where approximately 24,000 athletes will compete.

The marathon kicks off at 9 a.m. with athletes in wheelchairs leading the pack, followed by handcyclists and duos. The start times for professional and para athletes will follow, with four waves of open division runners commencing their races between 10 and 11:15 a.m., spaced 25 minutes apart.

Heartbreak Hill, a notorious challenge along the route in Newton, is a pivotal point for many runners. According to race officials, wheelchair competitors are projected to reach Heartbreak Hill shortly after 10 a.m.

“Every athlete faces unique challenges on this course, and Heartbreak Hill is a critical moment for both professionals and amateurs alike,” said a BAA spokesperson.

Following the wheelchair athletes, professional men will arrive at Heartbreak Hill around 11:16 a.m., with professional women following shortly after at 11:40 a.m. Participants in the four open waves will finish based on their qualifying times. The finish line will remain open until 5:30 p.m., accommodating all levels of runners.

For spectators hoping to catch the action, the first wheelchair athletes are anticipated to cross the finish line on Boylston Street by about 10:22 a.m., with the first professional male runners arriving around 11:45 a.m. The first professional females are expected to finish just after noon.

“This race is not just a test of speed; it’s a testament to human endurance and community support,” said another BAA representative. “We encourage everyone to come out to cheer on the athletes.”

As the marathon approaches, various events will be hosted in the surrounding areas, fostering community engagement. Registration for the 2025 Boston Marathon has already closed, but numerous local road races are upcoming, inviting runners of all abilities to participate and train.

This season, towns like Wellesley will host numerous races, continuing the tradition of celebrating road racing.

The Boston Marathon is a landmark event, representative of hard work, resilience, and community spirit, celebrated each year by thousands of runners and supporters alike.
