Boston Red Sox May Consider Trading All-Star Lucas Giolito This Summer

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox are reportedly considering trading one of their All-Star starting pitchers this summer. As the team navigates a disappointing 29-33 record, they are faced with the possibility of becoming sellers at the trade deadline if they do not improve in June.
According to Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer, Lucas Giolito has been highlighted as an intriguing trade candidate. Rymer noted, “This isn’t the same Lucas Giolito who was an All-Star and Cy Young Award contender between 2019 and 2021,” emphasizing that while Giolito does not throw as hard as he once did, he has still shown promise this season.
Giolito’s statistics this year include a 4.78 ERA over six starts, in which he has allowed five home runs, struck out 26 batters, and walked 10 across 32 innings. Despite these numbers, Rymer pointed out that Giolito’s changeup is effective, holding opponents to a .179 batting average. “He’s at least an innings-eater,” Rymer said, suggesting the Red Sox might be open to trading him to alleviate some of his $19 million salary.
The 30-year-old pitcher is currently in the second year of a two-year, $38.5 million contract, which includes a mutual option for 2026. Following an injury that sidelined him for all of the 2024 season and the start of 2025, Giolito’s resurgence has not brought the expected results, with his performance leaving fans wanting more.
As the Red Sox look towards the future, Rymer’s analysis indicates that if the team continues to lose throughout June, Giolito could be a valuable asset in a potential trade, whether to cut costs or bring in younger talent for the future.
