Brad Marchand Stanley Cup Final

EDMONTON, Canada — As the Stanley Cup Final begins Wednesday, all eyes are on Brad Marchand. The veteran forward for the Florida Panthers has significantly increased his market value this postseason, just weeks shy of entering free agency for the first time.

At 37, Marchand has been a key player for the Panthers, helping them reach the Final for the third consecutive year. Florida general manager Bill Zito praised Marchand, saying, “There’s no secrets as to what he is as a player. He’s more special than I could have imagined.”

During the playoffs, Marchand, wearing No. 63, has played over 210 minutes at even strength and has contributed 14 points, including an overtime goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs. His line with Anton Lundell and Eetu Luostarinen has been particularly effective, although listed as the team’s third line.

“His natural leadership really stands out,” teammate Sam Bennett said. “He doesn’t even have to try, and guys look up to him.”

The Panthers acquired Marchand in a pivotal trade on March 7, and his performance in Florida has only bolstered his reputation. Some sources predict he could command up to $8 million on his next contract, a significant raise from his current $6.125 million deal with the Bruins.

Marchand’s breakout during the playoffs comes after a challenging season, during which he recovered from various surgeries. “It was stressful in a lot of senses,” Marchand said. “Our team wasn’t having the success that we expected.”

Despite initial anxieties about joining the Panthers, Marchand quickly adapted. “I didn’t have expectations of where I was going to play,” he said. “I was just excited to be part of it.”

His seamless integration into the team has improved their performance, and his presence has been warmly welcomed off the ice as well. “He was just an awesome guy,” Bennett added about their time together at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

As Marchand looks ahead to free agency on July 1, his future remains uncertain. The Panthers must also make key decisions regarding their other free agents. However, Marchand is focused on the present. “You watch your 15, 16, 17 years go by, and you really had one opportunity to do it,” he said. “It makes it pretty special to be here again.”
