Atlanta Braves Catcher Jason Delay Trade

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Atlanta Braves have acquired catcher Jason Delay from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for cash considerations. This move follows Delay’s designation for assignment on April 1, as the Pirates added right-handed pitcher Thomas Harrington to their 40-man roster.

Delay is a 30-year-old catcher who has been with the Pirates since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2017 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut in 2022 and served as Pittsburgh’s backup catcher over parts of the 2022 and 2023 seasons. In total, he has appeared in 127 major league games, recording a batting average of .231 with two home runs across 373 plate appearances.

After a knee injury sidelined him at the start of the 2024 season, Delay underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus. He played only seven games before being optioned back to Triple-A Indianapolis. According to the Pirates, he has a career .239 batting average in seven minor league seasons, demonstrating his defensive skills rather than offensive prowess.

Delay joins the Braves as the fourth catcher on their 40-man roster, providing them with depth as they navigate injuries among their current roster. With starting catcher Sean Murphy rehabbing from a broken rib, Delay’s experience may prove valuable during this transitional period for the team.

The Braves have also transferred right-handed pitcher Reynaldo López to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster for Delay. López is currently recovering from shoulder inflammation and will undergo further examination to determine the extent of the injury.

Delay’s addition allows the Braves to maintain flexibility while navigating injuries that have impacted their catching situation. “We believe Jason will fit perfectly with our pitching staff,” said Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos. “He possesses solid framing skills and a strong reputation for working with pitchers, which will be beneficial in our lineup.”

Meanwhile, the Pirates face the New York Yankees for their first home series of the year, holding a record of 2-5. With Delay’s departure, the Pirates have turned to Joey Bart as their starting catcher and have a remaining player, whose name has not been disclosed, as a backup. The Pirates hope to build upon their early season as they open PNC Park this weekend.
