Scott Blewett Atlanta Braves Trade News

ATLANTA, Ga. — The Atlanta Braves announced the acquisition of right-handed relief pitcher Scott Blewett from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday for cash considerations. This move marks another shuffle in Blewett’s turbulent career, as he was designated for assignment by the Orioles just a day prior.

Blewett, 29, has experienced a rollercoaster ride in recent weeks. He began the season with the Minnesota Twins but was DFA’d after two appearances and subsequently claimed off waivers by the Orioles. After a brief stint in Baltimore that included two additional outings, he faced another designation, reflecting a recent trend in his career that has seen him change teams multiple times this month.

Despite the frequent roster changes, Blewett has shown promise during his time in the majors. He possesses a career 1.93 ERA over 37 1/3 innings pitched across four seasons with the Kansas City Royals, Twins, and Orioles. His performance metrics include a 23.1% strikeout rate and a 9.4% walk rate, indicating a solid ability to manage opponents.

“He has a lot of potential and we’ve seen him perform well in limited opportunities,” a Braves official noted. “We’re looking forward to seeing how he fits into our bullpen and contributes going forward.”

Blewett’s advanced statistics are noteworthy; he has a 2.16 SIERA, suggesting his success is consistent with his overall performance on the mound. However, his elevated 85.4% strand rate and .317 batting average on balls in play indicate that he has room for improvement. While he may not be a fireballer, with a reliance on precision over velocity, the interest from multiple teams in his services highlights his competitive potential.

The Braves’ bullpen has undergone significant changes lately, bringing in several veterans throughout the offseason and early season as they seek cost-effective depth. This most recent move follows recent trades for other relievers, including acquisitions from the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels.

Blewett’s transition to Atlanta comes as he is out of minor league options, making this latest move critical for his career continuity. The Braves designated left-handed reliever José Suarez for assignment to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for Blewett.

Having previously pitched effectively for Minnesota’s Triple-A affiliate, Blewett illustrated his capabilities by achieving a 1.77 ERA in 20 1/3 innings last year. However, he has also faced challenges at the Triple-A level, where he has a 6.93 ERA in over 200 innings across five seasons. The Braves will look to see if the new environment brings out the best in Blewett as they integrate him into their bullpen plans.

Blewett commented on his new opportunity, stating, “I’m excited to join the Braves and contribute to a team that has a strong chance of contending. I believe I can bring value to the bullpen and help us win games.”

As the Braves gear up for the continuing season, Blewett’s arrival adds another variable to a bullpen that has been in flux but remains determined to solidify its performance on the mound.
