ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves announced Sunday that they have claimed right-handed pitcher Ian Anderson off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. Anderson, who had been designated for assignment by the Angels earlier in the week, is set to rejoin the Braves for their upcoming series against the Colorado Rockies starting Monday.

Anderson, who turns 27 next week, is returning to Atlanta after a brief absence. The Braves originally drafted him third overall in the 2016 MLB Draft. He made his debut during the shortened 2020 season, quickly impressing fans and coaches alike. In his first two seasons, he recorded a 3.25 ERA over 30 starts, contributing significantly to the Braves’ run to the NLCS in 2020 and their World Series victory in 2021.

Despite early success, Anderson faced challenges in 2022. He struggled through his 22 starts, posting a 5.00 ERA before suffering an injury that required Tommy John surgery in early 2023. After a year of rehabilitation, he made 15 starts in the minors during the 2024 season, garnering a respectable 3.44 ERA in 68 innings.

Anderson began the current season with the Angels, where he made seven appearances with an 11.57 ERA before being placed back on waivers. His performance included 17 hits and seven walks in just over 9 innings of work.

The Braves’ decision to reclaim Anderson comes as they seek to bolster their pitching staff. With other pitchers like Reynaldo Lopez sidelined, Atlanta appears to be looking for reliable arms, especially as they face tough competition ahead. Anderson is expected to fill a bullpen role initially but may see some starts depending on how he performs.

“We’re excited to have Ian back,” Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos said, highlighting Anderson’s history with the team and potential contributions in future games. “He’s a talented pitcher, and we believe we can help him get back on track.”

In his previous time with the Braves, Anderson was noted for his postseason performances, with a 1.26 ERA in playoff appearances. Fans and analysts alike are hopeful that a return to familiar territory will reinvigorate his career in the majors.
