Breanna Stewart Re-Signs with New York Liberty Ahead of Training Camp

NEW YORK — Breanna Stewart has officially re-signed with the New York Liberty, the team announced Saturday. The move solidifies Stewart’s role in the franchise after she led the team to its inaugural WNBA championship last season.
Stewart, a three-time WNBA champion, previously spent seven seasons with the Seattle Storm before joining the Liberty in 2023. During her time in New York, she has averaged an impressive 21.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, along with 3.7 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.4 blocks.
“Bringing Stewie back to the Liberty was our top priority this offseason,” said Jonathan Kolb, general manager of the Liberty. “Her impact on and off the court is immeasurable — she’s not only one of the best and most accomplished players in the world, but a leader whose relentless drive is foundational to the standard we continue to build upon in New York.”
Stewart, 30, originally joined the Liberty to be closer to her home in Syracuse, New York. She was drafted first overall by the Storm in 2016 and quickly became one of the league’s premier athletes.
Recently, Stewart underwent surgery on her right meniscus early this month but is expected to make a full recovery in time for the start of training camp next month. During the offseason, she participated in the Unrivaled 3-on-3 league, which she co-founded with Napheesa Collier, where she averaged 19.1 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 3.1 assists, though her team did not qualify for the playoffs.
For the upcoming season, the Liberty will retain their entire starting lineup from last year’s championship run, which concluded with a crucial victory over the Minnesota Lynx in a decisive fifth game. The team has also strengthened its roster by trading for guard Natasha Cloud, indicating a commitment to defending their title in the upcoming season.
