Brewers’ Aaron Civale Requests Trade After Bullpen Move

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Veteran right-hander Aaron Civale has requested a trade from the Milwaukee Brewers after being moved to the bullpen to make way for top prospect Jacob Misiorowski. Civale, 30, made the request to Brewers general manager Matt Arnold on June 12, shortly after the team informed him of the decision.
Civale’s agent, Jack Toffey, described the conversation with Arnold as “very professional.” He stated, “I just very respectfully said that Aaron would really like an opportunity to continue his career as a starter. He’s going to be a free agent at the end of the year.”
Despite Civale’s strong performance, including a 3.32 ERA over 19 innings since returning from a hamstring strain, he found himself sidelined in favor of Misiorowski’s debut against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Brewers now boast a rotation consisting of Freddy Peralta, Chad Patrick, Quinn Priester, and José Quintana, all performing well.
Civale, previously acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in July 2024, has made a career total of 122 regular-season starts, pitching exclusively as a starter. His last relief appearance was in a postseason game against the New York Mets in 2024. Toffey added that other teams have expressed interest in trading for starting pitchers, potentially increasing Civale’s chances of moving.
Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy acknowledged Civale’s disappointment but emphasized the importance of keeping spirits high in the locker room. “We deal with players being unhappy all the time. Aaron’s got a great history. He’s performed well for this organization,” Murphy said.
Civale himself indicated he remains committed to performing well, saying, “Whatever’s next, I’m not exactly sure what’s going on… I’m in a position physically where I feel like I can contribute best as a starting pitcher.”
