Brewers Decline Club Option on Devin Williams, Paving Way for Potential Trade
The Milwaukee Brewers have declined their $10.5 million club option on closer Devin Williams, according to reports from ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Despite this decision, Williams will remain with the Brewers for the 2025 season through the arbitration process, where he is projected to earn approximately $7.7 million to $9 million.
Williams will receive a $250,000 buyout as part of the declined option. This move is seen as a strategic decision by the Brewers, who are aiming to manage their payroll and potentially set the stage for a trade. The team has a history of making such moves, having traded away key players like Josh Hader and Corbin Burnes in recent years.
Despite his limited appearances in 2024 due to stress fractures in his back, Williams was highly effective when he returned, posting a 1.25 ERA, 14 saves, and 38 strikeouts in 22 games. His performance and the Brewers’ willingness to stay “open-minded” about trading him make him a potential target for teams looking to bolster their bullpen, such as the Boston Red Sox.
The decision to decline the option and go through arbitration is expected to make Williams more attractive in trade discussions, as it reduces the financial commitment for any acquiring team. The Brewers’ GM, Matt Arnold, has indicated that the team will consider all options regarding Williams’ future with the club.
