Brewers Fall to Giants After Costly Sixth Inning Mistakes

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers suffered a 4-2 defeat against the San Francisco Giants on April 23, 2025, as a disastrous sixth inning dashed their hopes for victory.
Giants ace Logan Webb outperformed Brewers starter Freddy Peralta, who held the Giants scoreless for five innings before faltering in the sixth. With the score tied at 0-0, the inning began to unravel for Peralta and the Brewers.
Willy Adames started the damage with a single to center, followed by Jung Hoo Lee, who also singled. Peralta seemed to be in control with two strikes on Matt Chapman but lost his command, issuing a walk to load the bases. This moment sparked a series of events that resulted in four runs for the Giants.
Wilmer Flores knocked a two-run single that pushed the Giants ahead, capitalizing on a throw that deflected off shortstop Joey Ortiz, allowing additional runs to score. Errors by the Brewers’ defense further contributed to the unfortunate outcome, leading manager Pat Murphy to emphasize the need for improved defensive execution.
“We have to play defense. We have to make the plays to be better to win the game,” said Brewers catcher William Contreras, reflecting on the team’s struggles in crucial moments.
Despite only producing two runs in the ninth inning off closer Ryan Walker, the Brewers made a push as Brice Turang hit a ground-rule double that brought in two runs. However, Camilo Doval was brought in to close the game and made quick work of the final two batters, securing the victory for San Francisco.
After the game, Peralta expressed surprise at the team’s defensive lapses, stating, “Last year we won the Gold Glove as a team. It means that we have very good defense. For some reason, we’ve been struggling a little bit the last couple of games.”
Looking ahead, the Brewers will aim to split the series against the Giants in an afternoon game on April 24, featuring Tobias Myers making his season debut on the mound.
