MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Milwaukee Brewers have signed outfielder Mark Canha to a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to spring training, as reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post. This agreement on February 22, 2025, raises questions about the Brewers’ strategy for the upcoming season as they aim to strengthen their roster.

Canha, 36, had an uneventful offseason without garnering significant interest from major league teams until now. After concluding the 2024 season with the St. Louis Cardinals, Canha was acquired from the Detroit Tigers in July 2024 but faced challenges, including a right thumb sprain that placed him on the 10-day injured list in late September. Ultimately, he finished the 2024 season with a batting average of .242, an on-base percentage of .344, and a slugging percentage of .346, contributing seven home runs and 42 RBIs over 462 plate appearances.

Should Canha make the Brewers’ Opening Day roster, he is expected to serve primarily as a complimentary player behind Jackson Chourio, Garrett Mitchell, and Sal Frelick, as the team looks to find ways to utilize his experience to enhance their performance. Canha previously played for the Brewers at the end of the 2023 season after being traded from the New York Mets, where he achieved a batting line of .287/.373/.427 with five home runs and 33 RBIs across 204 plate appearances.

The addition of Canha could be pivotal for the Brewers as they navigate the competitive landscape of Major League Baseball. His versatility as an outfielder is seen as a valuable asset to improve the team’s depth and options, particularly in high-pressure situations. As the Brewers set their sights on the 2025 campaign, the franchise hopes Canha can leverage his experience and contribute significantly to their success on the field.

“It’s significant for the Brewers to enhance their roster depth,” said an unnamed source within the organization. “Canha’s track record shows potential for high performance, which is crucial as we prepare for a challenging season.”
