Brighton Faces Key Matches Without Veltman Due to Injury

BRIGHTON, England – Brighton & Hove Albion will be without first-choice right-back Joel Veltman for several weeks due to a foot injury. The 33-year-old defender missed Saturday’s 4-0 victory against Southampton and will be sidelined for crucial fixtures including Tuesday’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth and the FA Cup fifth round match against Newcastle on Sunday.
Veltman, who was pulled from training as a precaution last week, is considered to have an injury that is manageable. Head coach Fabian Hurzeler expressed optimism about Veltman’s recovery during a press conference on Monday, February 24. “We took him out at the right moment from training, otherwise we would risk a bad injury. At the moment, it’s an okay injury that wouldn’t take that long, so hopefully he will be back in some weeks,” Hurzeler stated.
Veltman has been a key player in Brighton’s defense, starting 19 of the team’s 26 Premier League matches this season. Hurzeler’s tactics often rely on Veltman’s experience and versatility, making his absence particularly challenging as Brighton pushes for European qualification.
With Veltman absent, Brighton benefits from the return of left-back Pervis Estupinan and utility player Solly March from muscle injuries. Estupinan played in the second half against Southampton, subbing in for Tariq Lamptey, while March remained on the bench.
Moreover, Jack Hinshelwood stepped in effectively as a right-back after previously playing in central midfield. The England under-21 international transitioned smoothly back into the defensive role, displaying his adaptability following 11 weeks away due to a knee injury.
However, Brighton will still be missing club captain Lewis Dunk due to a rib injury, and forward Danny Welbeck is doubtful after a training knock. Brighton currently sits ninth in the league and aim to secure valuable points this week against Bournemouth (sixth), Fulham (tenth), Manchester City (fourth), and Aston Villa (eighth).
“Every match matters for us in this dense schedule. We need to find a way to maintain our form and performance levels,” Hurzeler added, stressing the team’s focus as they navigate through the season.
The team is expected to rely on younger players and those returning from injury to fill the gaps left by their injured stars, making upcoming performances critically important in their fight for European spots.
