Broncos Close to Signing Former 49ers Safety Talanoa Hufanga

Denver, Colorado — The Denver Broncos are reportedly in advanced discussions to sign former San Francisco 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Hufanga, a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, earned Pro Bowl honors in 2022 but is looking to rebound after suffering a torn ACL during the 2023 season.
Despite recovering to play in seven games last season, Hufanga’s limited availability has raised concerns about his impact. He recorded 38 tackles and two tackles for loss during that time. The potential agreement, which is not yet finalized, reflects the Broncos’ ongoing efforts to improve their defense ahead of the new NFL season.
Fowler indicated that no free agent deals are officially completed until the league’s signing period begins at 4:00 PM ET on Wednesday, March 12. This ambiguity means that either the Broncos or Hufanga could still withdraw from negotiations, a scenario that has occurred in the past with other players.
If finalized, Hufanga would likely take the place of P.J. Locke, whose performance last season was considered subpar, prompting speculation about his future with the team. Hufanga’s inclusion would enhance a safety group that currently includes Brandon Jones, who stood out in 2024 with 115 tackles and 10 pass breakups.
The Broncos’ defensive strategy is becoming increasingly aggressive following their recent signing of defensive tackle D.J. Jones to a three-year, $39 million deal. Adding Hufanga would provide another playmaker in the secondary, solidifying their defense further as they aim for a successful 2025 season.
As free agency approaches, teams continue to scramble to secure their top targets, with Hufanga being one of several 49ers free agents likely to move on as San Francisco reshapes its roster. The 49ers appear unlikely to re-sign Hufanga, who became a key player in their defensive lineup during his early career. They currently have Malik Mustapha, Ji’Ayir Brown, and George Odum in their safety pipeline, following the impending loss of Hufanga.
Fans and analysts alike will be keeping a close eye on the situation as the deadline for free-agent agreements quickly approaches.
