Broncos Coach Wilhoite Arrested on Assault Charges in Denver

DENVER, Colo. — Michael Wilhoite, the Denver Broncos‘ outside linebackers coach, was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, according to jail records. The incident occurred shortly after Wilhoite dropped someone off at Denver International Airport.
The 38-year-old Wilhoite was booked into the Denver jail on Sunday with a no-bond hold. He faces charges of second-degree assault of a peace officer and is scheduled for a court appearance on Monday.
The Broncos released a statement confirming their awareness of the situation, stating they are in the process of gathering more information. The franchise did not provide additional details regarding the incident.
Wilhoite joined the Broncos’ coaching staff in 2023 after spending the previous seasons as a defensive assistant and special teams assistant under head coach Sean Payton in 2019 and 2020. He had also served as the linebackers coach from 2021 to 2022.
Before transitioning to coaching, Wilhoite had a six-season career as a linebacker in the NFL, during which he accumulated 298 tackles and four interceptions over 79 games, including 45 starts. He played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2012 to 2016 and the New Orleans Saints in 2017.
The Broncos hope to resolve the situation swiftly and have not disclosed any further plans regarding Wilhoite’s coaching responsibilities pending the outcome of the legal proceedings.
