Cleveland Browns Myles Garrett Signing Extension

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns, coming off a disappointing 3-14 season in 2024, have made significant moves as they prepare for the new league year. On Sunday, the team announced a four-year extension for defensive end Myles Garrett, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history with a deal worth an average of $40 million per year and over $122 million guaranteed.

Garrett’s decision to remain with the franchise comes as the Browns also embark on a crucial search for quarterbacks to improve the team’s dismal offensive performance. Following the failed experiment with quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is recovering from a second ruptured Achilles tendon, the Browns are expected to pursue a veteran quarterback while addressing needs in the upcoming draft.

Garrett’s extension reflects the Browns’ need to retain their core defensive talents amidst a flurry of offseason changes. “We’ve agreed to terms on a four-year extension with Myles Garrett!” the Browns announced on social media. His new contract is expected to free up additional cap space for the team as they maneuver through a slow free-agent market.

Last week, the Browns cleared around $36 million in cap space, positioning themselves for value signings. Still, they face challenges in acquiring top-tier talent, especially after committing substantial funds to Garrett. Their current cap space, approximately $12.5 million, restricts options in a mediocre free-agent class.

The team has already commenced player transactions, including the trade of quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson to Philadelphia for Kenny Pickett. Pickett becomes the only healthy quarterback under contract with the Browns, while the franchise remains in pursuit of another veteran signal-caller to serve as a potential starter.

In addition to Pickett, the Browns announced the addition of defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka on a one-year deal and offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas, who brings experience at both tackle positions. The Browns are also re-signing linebacker Devin Bush to a one-year, $3.25 million contract, reaffirming their commitment to enhancing the defense.

With the NFL Draft approaching next month, the Browns hold crucial selections, including the second overall pick and two third-round picks. The decisions made in this offseason will ultimately shape the trajectory of the team for years to come, especially in addressing the glaring need for a reliable quarterback.

General Manager Andrew Berry has acknowledged the urgency of the situation, expressing the importance of drafting wisely. “This offseason is critical for us, particularly as we look to turn things around after last year’s struggles,” Berry stated. “Retaining Myles was essential, and we’ve got to make sure we continue to build around him.”

With their quarterback situation in flux, the Browns are hopeful for a successful offseason, which will include exploring free-agent options and potentially drafting a quarterback to secure their future. The focus now shifts to the upcoming draft as the team aims to address its pressing needs while committing to its defensive cornerstone, Garrett, for the long term.
