Nfl Free Agency Edge Rushers Cleveland Browns

CLEVELAND, Ohio — As March unfolds, NFL fans are gearing up for the start of free agency, officially set to kick off on March 12. The Cleveland Browns find themselves in a pivotal position, especially following star defensive end Myles Garrett‘s recent public request for a trade.

The Browns, under the guidance of General Manager Andrew Berry, are assessing top edge rushers available on the market, including several notable names who could bolster their defensive lineup. With Garrett’s future in a cloud of uncertainty, Cleveland’s need for quality pass rushers has become increasingly urgent.

Key edge rushing prospects include:

In addition to these players, Cleveland has also targeted Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, who was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021. Tryon-Shoyinka amassed a total of 138 tackles and 15 sacks during his four seasons with the Buccaneers, though his performance last year was below expectations, recording only 24 tackles and two sacks.

Despite a lackluster campaign, multiple factors make Tryon-Shoyinka an enticing addition for the Browns. His durability stands out, given that he has only missed two games in his career, both occurring in the previous season. With Garrett and a modest 41 sacks recorded in 2024, reinforcing the edge rushing unit is critical for the team’s defensive strategy.

“We believe in Joe’s potential,” Berry stated in a recent interview. “Even with Myles on the roster, we must find additional ways to pressure quarterbacks effectively.”

The Browns have had to navigate tight financial constraints in the offseason, but their recent activities demonstrate a commitment to enhancing the roster. Although the full details of Tryon-Shoyinka’s contract are still under wraps, the Browns are actively working to solidify their lineup ahead of training camp.

Berry has historically built strategic depth in the edge position. Over previous years, the roster composition has shifted, with Garrett consistently leading the unit. As the Browns prepare for the upcoming season, competitive dynamics will influence player retention and acquisition decisions. Previous years’ rosters showcased significant changes:

  • 2020: Garrett, Vernon, Clayborn, Jackson, Gustin
  • 2021: Garrett, Clowney, McKinley, Jackson
  • 2022: Garrett, Clowney, Winovich, Wright, Thomas
  • 2023: Garrett, Smith, Okoronkwo, Wright, McGuire
  • 2024: Garrett, Smith, Okoronkwo, Wright, McGuire

Entering the offseason, the Browns are expected to retain multiple edge rushers while making room for emerging talent. The potential departure of players like Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and Alex Wright may be on the horizon if more seasoned candidates are brought into the fold.

Looking ahead, the pursuit of bigger names such as Za'Darius Smith or Matt Judon could reshape the Browns’ edge position substantially. “We’re keeping our options open,” Berry added. “There are several avenues we can explore in free agency, and we aim to improve where needed.”
