Bruce Springsteen Reflects on Balancing Fame and Family Life
Bruce Springsteen, the iconic rock star awarded 20 Grammy titles, recently discussed the challenges and triumphs of raising his family while remaining a globally recognized musician. In a recent interview, Springsteen, now 75, highlighted his deliberate efforts, alongside his wife Patti Scialfa, to shield their three children from the overwhelming influence of their fame.
Springsteen’s three children—Evan, 34, Jessica, 32, and Samuel, 30—were often kept away from the spotlight. The couple refrained from extensively exposing them to the showbiz environment. “When they were little, if they heard me on the radio, they would go, ‘Bruce Springsteen!’ It was their way of separating their dad from this abstract character who also seemed to be a part of their lives,” Springsteen conveyed.
The rock legend described how their children maintained autonomy and normalcy in their lives, engaging with their own interests and careers. Evan has pursued a career in music, Jessica is a professional equestrian, and Samuel serves as a firefighter. “They showed a healthy disinterest in our work over all the years,” revealed Springsteen, indicating a successful effort in maintaining a balance between their family life and his career.
Springsteen also candidly discussed his relationship with Scialfa, who has been his companion both on and off stage. The pair, having known each other since the late 1970s, married in 1991 and continue to perform together. Praising Scialfa, Springsteen referred to her as “a very good songwriter” who, despite being his partner, has faced challenges in receiving due recognition for her work.
Reflecting on his dual roles as a musician and a father, Springsteen humorously recounted his responsibilities when not on stage: “I’m the chauffeur who gets the kids to school at 6 a.m.” He elaborated on their relationship dynamics saying, “I’m the captain of that particular ship” when performing but emphasized the equitable sharing of roles when at home.
Springsteen addressed rumors about retirement and farewell tours during a concert at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Dismissive of the idea, he told fans, “We ain’t doing no farewell tour… Farewell to what? Thousands of people screaming your name? Yeah, I wanna quit that.”
The musician continues his contribution to the entertainment industry, preparing for an international tour with the E Street Band, scheduled to commence in Montreal on October 31. The potentially exhaustive tour plans to cover several countries, stretching into the summer of 2025.
