Bruins Captain Brad Marchand Injured in Game Against Penguins

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand faced an injury scare Saturday afternoon during a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena. The 36-year-old forward was assisted off the ice following an awkward collision with Penguins defenseman Pierre-Olivier Joseph in the first period.
The incident occurred at 14:08, when Marchand was skating into the corner to retrieve the puck. Joseph inadvertently caught Marchand’s left skate with his stick, causing Marchand to lose his footing and fall headfirst into the boards. After lying on the ice for several minutes, he was helped down the tunnel to the Bruins’ locker room.
The Bruins have not yet made an official announcement regarding Marchand’s injury status for the remainder of the game.
Prior to his exit, Marchand had logged just 2:18 of ice time over three shifts. The injury happened while the Bruins were on a power play. This season, Marchand has scored 21 goals and recorded 47 points across 60 games.
During the same game, Bruins defenseman Mason Lohrei scored his fourth goal of the season, extending Boston’s lead to 2-0. David Pastrnak opened the scoring just 1:32 into the first period with his 32nd goal of the season, enhancing his impressive point streak to 17 games.
Earlier in the week, the Bruins made roster adjustments ahead of the trade deadline by recalling forwards Georgii Merkulov and Jeffrey Viel, along with defenseman Ian Mitchell from AHL-Providence. General manager Don Sweeney announced the moves on Friday, which also involved assigning forwards Riley Tufte and Oliver Wahlstrom, as well as defenseman Michael Callahan, to Providence.
Merkulov, at 24 years old, has previously played three games with the NHL club this season. In his time with Providence over the past three years, he has recorded 68 goals and 101 assists for a total of 169 points in 189 career games. Meanwhile, both Mitchell and Viel, who are 26 and 28 respectively, have yet to make their debut for the Bruins this season.
Bruins fans will be hoping for good news regarding Marchand as the team continues their season. The Bruins are set to face the Penguins again later on Saturday.
