Bruins Seek Second Straight Win Over Rangers in NHL Showdown
NEW YORK, N.Y. — The Boston Bruins aim to secure their second consecutive victory over the New York Rangers on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, following a decisive 6-3 win on Saturday. The Bruins, riding a two-game win streak, will face a Rangers team fresh off a Sunday victory against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Goaltender Joonas Korpisalo is expected to start for Boston, replacing Jeremy Swayman, who made 35 saves in Tuesday night’s 3-0 shutout against the Minnesota Wild. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
The Bruins (27-22-6) have shown resilience after a mid-season slump, winning seven of their last 11 games. However, their defensive metrics remain concerning, ranking 28th in shot attempt percentage and 30th in expected goals percentage at even strength over the past month. Offensively, they have been strong, ranking sixth in goals per 60 minutes since Jan. 5.
David Pastrnak has been a standout performer for Boston, leading the NHL in goals (17) and points (38) since Dec. 13. He recorded three goals and one assist in Saturday’s win over the Rangers, extending his point streak to 11 games. “Pastrnak has been carrying the team,” said a team analyst. “With Charlie McAvoy back and Hampus Lindholm nearing a return, the Bruins hope to ease his workload.”
Meanwhile, the Rangers (25-23-4) have had two days of rest since their last game, giving them a slight edge in preparation. Goaltender Igor Shesterkin, despite a shaky performance against Boston last weekend, remains a key asset. Shesterkin ranks third in goals saved above expected this season, according to advanced metrics, though his career record against the Bruins is less impressive, with a 4-8 record and a .900 save percentage.
New York’s offense has been slightly more effective than Boston’s recently, ranking third in goals per 60 minutes over the past month. However, their defense has been average, sitting 16th in goals against per 60.
Artemi Panarin leads the Rangers in shot attempts since Dec. 28, with 137, while Mika Zibanejad has been consistent, registering three or more shots in 11 of his last 18 games. “Zibanejad doesn’t attempt as many shots as Panarin, but he’s been efficient,” noted a Rangers analyst.
As both teams prepare for the matchup, the Bruins will look to capitalize on their recent momentum, while the Rangers aim to avenge Saturday’s loss and improve their playoff positioning.
