Manchester United‘s captain, Bruno Fernandes, will miss the team’s upcoming Europa League match following his dismissal in Thursday’s 3-3 draw against FC Porto at Estadio Dragao. The midfielder received a red card late in the match, after a second bookable offence, for a high boot while attempting to reach an Alejandro Garnacho cross.

The match began well for Manchester United, who took a 2-0 lead thanks to Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund. Rashford scored early, cutting through two Porto players before beating the goalkeeper, Diogo Costa. Shortly after, Rashford set up Hojlund for the second goal, further increasing United’s advantage.

However, FC Porto managed to respond before the half-time whistle. A goal from Brazilian forward Pepe, followed by a header from Samu Omorodion, brought the score to 2-2. Porto continued their comeback in the second half, as Pepe assisted Omorodion for his second goal, giving the home side a 3-2 lead.

Fernandes’ sending-off in the 81st minute appeared to seal United’s fate, but defender Harry Maguire salvaged a point for the visitors with a last-minute header from a Christian Eriksen corner. Despite the draw, Manchester United has now gone four games without a victory, increasing pressure on manager Erik ten Hag.

The result means Fernandes is ineligible for Manchester United’s next Europa League fixture against Fenerbahce on 24 October but will be available for their Premier League clash against Aston Villa this week. The player’s red card against FC Porto does not affect his domestic league participation, especially after an appeal overturned a previous suspension for a red card in a match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United will be looking to improve their defensive performance after being heavily exposed during the match against FC Porto. The next test for United will be crucial as they face former manager José Mourinho in a challenging away match against Fenerbahce.
