Brunson Returns as Knicks Eye Playoff Push Against Suns

ATLANTA — The New York Knicks are poised to welcome back All-Star guard Jalen Brunson as they prepare for their matchup against the Phoenix Suns on Sunday. Brunson, who has been sidelined for 15 games due to an ankle sprain, was cleared for basketball activities last week and is expected to take the court at Madison Square Garden.
Brunson’s return comes at a pivotal time for the Knicks, who hold a 49-28 record and sit firmly in the third position in the Eastern Conference. The team has managed to remain competitive without their captain, going 8-6 during his absence. Brunson’s decision to return against the Suns instead of playing both games in a back-to-back set suggests the importance of maintaining his health for the playoff stretch.
Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau expressed confidence in his players’ preparations and the need for a collective effort. “It’s more about how they feel and what we think is best given all the factors that are involved,” Thibodeau said following Friday’s practice. “We have to make a good decision.”
In Brunson’s absence, players like OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges have stepped up significantly. Anunoby, in particular, has recorded at least 23 points in each of his past six games and is adapting to a different role with Brunson’s anticipated return. “I think aggressiveness is the biggest thing for him,” said teammate Josh Hart. “He’s using his frame to get to the basket and finish.”
Brunson’s usage rate of 29% illustrates his importance to the team on the offensive end, as he leads the Knicks in touches per game. Anunoby’s usage has fluctuated based on Brunson’s availability, rising to 23.9% when Brunson was sidelined but dropping to 18.1% when playing alongside him. This change in dynamics raises questions about how the two can coexist effectively.
“The game tells you what to do. Whose shot is it in transition? The open man,” Thibodeau noted when discussing potential adjustments on the floor. “It’s all about what gives the team the best chance to win, and that should be the focus.”
As for the Knicks’ recent performance, they defeated the Atlanta Hawks 121-105 on Saturday, showcasing their offensive capabilities with 15 three-pointers. Karl-Anthony Towns led the team with 30 points, while Anunoby added another 24. The team displayed defensive strength, limiting the Hawks to under 37% shooting.
Brunson’s return signals more than just an insertion into the lineup; it is a moment for recalibration as the playoffs approach. The Knicks are focused on solidifying their position and adapting their game plan to optimize performances from all players involved. As Thibodeau stated, success hinges on team-first mentality, stating, “If you care about winning, that stuff shouldn’t matter.”
Looking ahead, the Knicks are optimistic about maintaining their playoff position while integrating Brunson back into their lineup. With only five games left in the regular season, the upcoming match against the Suns will be critical to solidify their strategy for the postseason.
