Bucks’ Playoff Hopes Hang on Kuzma’s Aggression

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Milwaukee Bucks’ inconsistent performance continues to raise concerns as they head toward the playoffs, particularly after their recent 112-100 defeat against the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 9. The loss marked their ninth consecutive defeat against top teams in the Eastern Conference.
Despite a strong individual showing from Giannis Antetokounmpo, who scored 30 points, the Bucks struggled to display cohesive teamwork. Recording just 17 assists — their second-fewest this season — the team’s offensive woes were evident throughout the game. The Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell spearheaded a decisive 13-0 run, seizing control of the game after Kyle Kuzma momentarily gave the Bucks an 89-84 lead with a three-pointer.
With time winding down and the stakes growing higher, Antetokounmpo’s frustration was palpable as he issued a clear challenge to Kuzma. “Do not think about me. Just play free. Be aggressive,” Antetokounmpo said. He emphasized the need for Kuzma to capitalize on his skills and encourage a potent offensive threat. “If the guy goes under, shoot the ball. If the guy goes over, try to turn the corner. You’re 6’10”, go to the rim,” he added.
In response, Kuzma acknowledged his teammate’s critique, expressing regret over the team’s overall performance. “We let our heads down a little bit. I think we played on our heels, not being decisive,” Kuzma noted. Since joining the Bucks on February 5, he’s had remarkable moments but struggles with consistency have overshadowed his contributions.
Kuzma finished the Cleveland game with 14 points, one assist, and six rebounds, but his performance continues to fall short of expectations. He averaged just 15 points per game earlier this season, with a career-low shooting percentage of 42% from the field. While there were bright spots, such as a standout game against the Timberwolves with 13 rebounds, Kuzma’s lack of offensive decisiveness remains a concern for the Bucks.
Doc Rivers, the Bucks’ head coach, also expressed apprehension about Kuzma’s adjustment to the team. “I think Kuz is probably the hardest to integrate in a lot of ways. He’s being almost too unselfish right now,” Rivers evaluated. With the playoffs rapidly approaching, the urgency for Kuzma to cease hesitating is paramount for the team’s championship aspirations.
The Bucks’ shooting percentages further illustrated their difficulties in the defeat, as they struggled with a dismal 29% from three-point range, compared to the Cavaliers’ 40.4%. The game highlighted a crucial gap in Milwaukee’s offense, indicating that Kuzma’s role as a playmaker must evolve for the Bucks to regain their competitive edge.
As the regular season nears its end, it’s clear the Bucks lack the luxury of time. The pressure mounts on Kuzma to assert himself into the lineup decisively. Antetokounmpo’s challenge, simple yet urgent—“Be you”—serves as both a reminder and a call to action for his new teammate. If Kuzma can shift his mindset and embrace a more aggressive playing style, Milwaukee may very well enhance its playoff prospects.
With only a month remaining before the postseason, the proverbial clock is ticking. Will Kuzma respond to the high expectations set forth by his teammates and the coaching staff? The answer could determine not only his future with the Bucks but also the team’s potential success come playoff time.
