Buffalo Bandits Seek Redemption Against San Diego Seals After OT Loss

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Buffalo Bandits are gearing up for a rematch against the San Diego Seals this Saturday after suffering a narrow 14-13 overtime loss last weekend. The game, which will take place at Pechanga Arena in San Diego at 10 p.m. EST, follows a heartbreaking finish for the Bandits, who are currently 7-1 and lead the National Lacrosse League (NLL) standings.
In the tightly contested match on February 15, the Bandits faced a fierce opponent, with San Diego scoring the game-winning goal in the fifth minute of overtime. Coach John Tavares addressed the defeat, emphasizing the need for his players to regroup: “I tell the guys we attack by committee, just turn the page, unite, and get ready for a new game,” he said. The Bandits entered the game with high hopes, having won 16 consecutive games before this setback.
A pivotal moment in the last game occurred when Bandits’ player Matt Spanger suffered a serious ankle injury. Play continued as Spanger remained down on the turf, prompting criticism regarding officiating protocol. While play can continue until the injured player’s team secures possession of the ball, Rule 28.5 permits officials to stop the game for serious injuries. In this case, the referees opted not to halt play, leading to a San Diego goal. Many believe this decision must be re-evaluated to ensure player safety.
This Saturday’s game marks a chance for the Bandits to bounce back. They aim to leverage their performance against San Diego from the previous match as they dive into game tape and strategize for a different outcome. Bandits captain Steve Priolo noted his team’s unity and determination for improvement: “Our record is 0-0 right now, and we are going forward. There’s a lot of room for improvement,” he stated.
Priolo and the rest of the Bandits understand the importance of regaining their momentum. Following this weekend’s contest, they will continue their Western road swing with an upcoming game in Saskatchewan before returning home against Calgary on March 8.
The Bandits have been relying heavily on their leading scorer, Dhane Smith, who leads the NLL with 56 assists this season. Coach Tavares praised Smith’s performance, highlighting his significant contribution to the team’s success and strategic plays. “He has been outstanding in setting up his teammates,” said Tavares.
As anticipation builds for Saturday’s faceoff, the Bandits emphasize learning from their previous encounters with the Seals. The teams have a storied rivalry, and Priolo reflected on the lessons learned, stating, “We’ll review the video of special plays. Defenses are a lot about picking up tendencies and what they like to do.”
The Bandits head to San Diego with confidence, bolstered by their undefeated history in the area and motivated to avenge last week’s crushing loss. Coverage of the game will be available on ESPNU, ESPN+, and local radio station 1520 AM.
