Buffalo Bills Face Tough Decision on Von Miller Amid Cap Struggles

KANSAS CITY, Missouri — The Buffalo Bills are at a crossroads this offseason as they evaluate the future of veteran edge rusher Von Miller, who has struggled in recent seasons. After recording just six sacks over the past two years, all in 2024, the team’s front office must decide whether to keep him, given his hefty salary cap implications.

Miller, set to account for a significant amount of Buffalo’s cap space in 2025, presents a dilemma. If the Bills cut him prior to June 1, they could save $8.3 million in cap space while currently facing an overage of $9.7 million. However, utilizing a post-June 1 designation would extend the savings to $17.4 million, although those funds would not be immediately available.

According to NFL analyst Matt Iyer, the decision on Miller could influence the Bills’ pursuit of Los Angeles Chargers star Joey Bosa. Iyer remarked, “Buffalo is another team that could be in the mix as the uncertainty of Von Miller’s future looms. The Bills may see the upside of going younger with Bosa and also offer an attractive opportunity to win as they’ve been on the cusp of glory for the past few years.”

Bosa, who tallied five sacks in 14 games during the previous season, could serve as a suitable replacement for Miller. At 29 years old, Bosa is significantly younger and presents a potential multi-year solution for Buffalo’s defense. However, he also brings some injury concerns, having missed 23 games in the last three seasons.

Ultimately, the Bills’ interest in Bosa will hinge on Miller’s fate and the financial demands of the Chargers’ linebacker. If Buffalo manages to restructure Miller’s contract, it may keep him on the roster at a price comparable to Bosa’s expected market value, estimated to be in the range of $10-$12 million.

Should the team decide to part ways with Miller, Bosa appears to be a viable option that could fill the void effectively and strengthen Buffalo’s defensive line moving forward.
