SAN JOSE, Calif. — Brent Burns is set to play his 911th consecutive NHL game Thursday night as the Carolina Hurricanes face the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center, solidifying his place as the fifth-longest streak holder in league history, passing former Sharks teammate Patrick Marleau.

The 40-year-old Burns, who spent a significant part of his career in San Jose, has become a standout player since his trade to the Hurricanes in 2022. From 2015 to 2019, he led all defensemen in scoring with 301 points, capturing the Norris Trophy in 2017.

“It’s always special to come back to San Jose,” Burns said, reflecting on his time with the Sharks. “I’ve seen a lot of familiar faces and have great memories here.”

Burns downplayed the significance of his streak, indicating a preference not to focus on personal milestones. “I just try to take it one game at a time,” he stated. Nevertheless, his achievements serve as a testament to his durability and skill as a hockey player.

Burns also shared thoughts about his former teammates, including Marleau and Joe Thornton, whose jerseys now hang in the rafters at SAP Center. “Seeing Patty’s and Jumbo’s numbers up there is special. They both meant a lot to me,” he said.

On a more personal note, Burns recently spent time with Thornton, reminiscing about their years together and reflecting on how they have both navigated their careers. “There’s a lot of nostalgia,” Burns admitted while laughing about their hangout with Thornton’s young housemate, Macklin Celebrini, a promising player with the Junior Sharks.

The Sharks are twice the underdogs as they face a Hurricanes team riding a seven-game winning streak, but the night is set to be special for Burns regardless of the outcome on the ice. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 PM PST.

“I love San Jose. The organization has always been good to me and my family,” Burns said. “It’s always fun to come back, and I’m looking forward to the game.”
