Jimmy Butler Warriors Debut January 2025

CHICAGO (AP) — Jimmy Butler made an immediate impact in his debut with the Golden State Warriors, scoring 25 points and leading the team to a 132-111 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Saturday. This game marked Butler’s return to the court after a tumultuous split from the Miami Heat and came exactly one year after the death of his father.

Butler’s first contributions were electrifying, including an alley-oop dunk that sparked cheers from the Chicago crowd. Coach Steve Kerr praised him after the game, stating, “He’s a lion out there,” attributing his energy as crucial in helping the Warriors to their win.

Despite not having practiced with his new team prior to the game, Butler showcased his skills, scoring eight points during a decisive 16-1 run that turned the tide in the Warriors’ favor. He sank seven of his 12 shooting attempts and added four assists and two rebounds, cementing his place in the team amid a playoff push.

Butler acknowledged the emotional significance of his debut, sharing how special it was to play in Chicago, where he began his six-season NBA career. His jersey bore the name “Butler III,” a tribute to his late father, a mark he intends to keep moving forward. “I am grateful to be able to play basketball for a top organization like this one,” he added.

The Warriors traded Andrew Wiggins to Miami in a multi-team deal that brought Butler into the fold. This strategic move came as the team, plagued by inconsistency, aimed for a playoff resurgence, currently holding the 10th spot in the Western Conference with a 26-26 record.

Golden State’s performance was further buoyed by Stephen Curry, who contributed 24 points, including a significant third-quarter surge that set the tone for the second half. Kerr noted, “We need each other,” emphasizing the importance of teamwork as the season progresses.

Though Butler expressed light-heartedness before the game, admitting his strategy was to “Pass the ball to Steph and get out the way,” his actions showed that he is ready to take an active role in helping the Warriors aim for another championship title. With Butler on board, the franchise hopes to reclaim prominence after their previous success.
