Byd Emax 7 Vs Toyota Innova Hycross

With the launch of the BYD eMAX 7, India sees another entrant into the premium Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) market just in time for the festive season. Currently, Toyota dominates this sector with its popular models, the Innova Crysta and the more technologically advanced Innova Hycross. Comparisons are naturally drawn to the Innova Hycross Hybrid, as the Innova Crysta’s diesel engine and ladder frame construction does not directly compete with the all-electric BYD eMAX 7.

The BYD eMAX 7 commands attention with its competitive pricing, especially in its top-spec Superior trim, which undercuts the top-spec ZX(O) trim of the Innova Hycross Hybrid despite being equipped with a significantly larger 71.8 kWh battery, compared to the Hycross Hybrid’s 1.6 kWh to 1.7 kWh battery pack. This pricing strategy is largely attributed to the tax benefits pure electric vehicles (EVs) enjoy compared to hybrids.

Dimension-wise, the Innova Hycross is slightly larger than the eMAX 7, with dimensions reflecting a 45 mm longer, 35 mm wider, and 95 mm taller frame, alongside a 50 mm longer wheelbase. Additionally, the Hycross offers 15 mm more ground clearance over the eMAX 7, and features larger 18-inch alloys compared to the eMAX 7’s 17-inch wheels.

Both vehicles are constructed as monocoque front-wheel drive (FWD) models and await crash-testing results. The BYD eMAX 7 is equipped with a battery offering up to 530 km of claimed pure electric range. Although the Hycross’s battery is notably smaller, it doesn’t impede its overall performance as BYD leads in power output at 201 bhp and 310 Nm of peak torque, accelerating to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds with a top speed of 180 km/h.

Feature-wise, both vehicles showcase comprehensive Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and multiple airbags alongside technologies like a 360-degree camera, wireless charging, and electric tailgates. A notable advantage of the Innova Hycross is its focus on passenger comfort, particularly for second-row passengers, offering rear sun shades, electrically adjustable seats with ottomans, and a separate climate zone. In contrast, the eMAX 7 boasts a singular climate control zone and an innovative rotatable 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

The exterior of the BYD eMAX 7 includes select features like projector headlights and swipe-style rear indicators that enhance its modern appeal. Its panoramic glass roof contrasts with the Hycross’s panoramic sunroof. These features highlight the BYD eMAX 7 as a performance-focused driver’s vehicle, while the Innova Hycross caters more towards the comfort of chauffeur-driven passengers.

As both vehicles are competitive in features and pricing, each exhibits distinct strengths tailored to different consumer priorities, making the choice between them largely dependent on whether the buyer values performance or passenger comfort more heavily.
