MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton was held out of the starting lineup on Thursday due to a bruised left hand. However, the injury is not expected to sideline him for long.

Manager Rocco Baldelli announced before the game against the New York Yankees that Buxton might be available as a substitute, potentially as a pinch-hitter, depending on how he felt. Buxton was hit by a pitch in the first inning on Wednesday but managed to run the bases before being removed prior to his next at-bat. The pitch struck part of the protective pad Buxton wears on his hand, raising initial concerns.

“Nothing’s really gotten worse from yesterday,” Baldelli said. “He’s definitely sore, and for the same reasons he came out of the game yesterday, he’s not going to be starting the game today. I think he’s going to be fine, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s back out there soon.”

Buxton, 31, is having a spectacular season, tying for sixth in the American League with 20 home runs through 75 games. He ranks third in the AL in runs scored and slugging percentage, sixth in OPS, and seventh in stolen bases.

Selected for his second All-Star Game this year, Buxton is also set to participate in the Home Run Derby, which will take place next week in his home state of Georgia. His injury appears not to jeopardize his availability for these events.

“We’re just going to be seeing how he is today and tomorrow and see what he’s capable of,” Baldelli added. “The next couple of days will basically give us that answer.”
