Cade Cunningham Overcomes Adversity to Lead Pistons Toward NBA Playoff Contention

DETROIT, Mich. — Cade Cunningham, the Detroit Pistons’ star point guard and 2021 NBA Draft No. 1 overall pick, has transformed his struggles into success this season, leading his team back into playoff contention.
Midway through the 2023-24 season, Cunningham faced his toughest challenge yet—his team tied the NBA record with 28 consecutive losses, leaving him feeling the weight of heavy expectations. “It was such a dark cloud over the whole building,” Cunningham recalled, reflecting on the emotional toll the losing streak took on the team. “Everybody was feeling it.”
In those difficult moments, Cunningham grappled with self-doubt, often unable to sleep and consumed by thoughts about his performance. Despite his struggles, he remained committed to improving and leading his teammates. Social media criticism labeling him a “bust” only intensified the pressure he felt. “I kind of allowed the ‘bust’ and like, ‘Oh he’s whatever,’ to linger in my mind,” he said. “You don’t have to allow what people think of you to control who you really are.”
Last season was particularly challenging for Cunningham, who had missed most of it following a left shin injury. Returning this season, he focused on improving his game, leading to an explosive resurgence in performance. As of February, he averaged 25.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 9.5 assists, shooting 45.9% from the field and earning his first All-Star selection.
On the court, Cunningham exhibits a newfound confidence and calmness, marking a significant evolution from his previous seasons. Pistons owner Tom Gores praised his contributions, stating, “[He] has been instrumental in our team’s resurgence and has been the driving force behind our forward momentum.”
Cunningham’s ability to make pivotal plays has stood out, as demonstrated in a recent game against the Boston Celtics where he recorded 21 points and 11 assists, helping the Pistons achieve their longest winning streak since 2008. This dramatic turnaround in fate is partially attributed to coaching changes within the organization and Cunningham’s dedication to self-improvement.
Teammates have taken notice of his leadership style, affirming that he fosters a sense of community. “If you look around him, his teammates get better,” head coach J.B. Bickerstaff stated. Cunningham encourages his teammates to show resilience: “He wants the ball in different situations, whether it’s to create for a teammate or make a shot himself.”
This season’s transformation comes after three tumultuous years filled with challenges and setbacks. His journey has instilled a deep sense of self-awareness and has helped him turn criticism into fuel for his growth. Reflecting on his early career, Cunningham said, “I had to learn to define myself on my own terms. Resilience means maintaining yourself in trying times.”
As he continues to lead the Pistons toward a potential playoff berth, Cunningham has found his footing both on and off the court. Recent performances show he is not only a powerful individual contributor but also a capable leader who unites his team with positivity and shared purpose. “We want to be in the playoffs this year,” he emphasized, highlighting the renewed hope that surrounds the franchise.
