Caitlin Clark Carver Hawkeye Arena Jersey Retirement

IOWA CITY, IowaCaitlin Clark, the former Iowa basketball phenom and WNBA Rookie of the Year, returned to Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday as the university prepared to retire her No. 22 jersey. The ceremony marks a significant milestone for Clark, who has become one of the most recognizable figures in sports.

Clark, 23, reflected on her journey from college stardom to professional success with the Indiana Fever, acknowledging both the adoration and criticism that have accompanied her rise. “I feel like one of my greatest skills is I really don’t care,” Clark said during a press conference. “I believe in myself, I’m confident in myself, I’m confident in my teammates—I try to instill that in them.”

Her jersey will join those of other Iowa legends in the rafters, a testament to her impact on the program. During her time at Iowa, Clark shattered records, including becoming the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer, and led the Hawkeyes to their first national championship game in 2024.

Clark’s return to Iowa City comes after a standout rookie season in the WNBA, where she averaged 18.7 points, 5.9 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game. Despite her success, she has faced scrutiny from critics, a challenge she addressed with characteristic poise. “I’m confident in the coaching staff on whatever team I was on, whether that was here or whether that’s at the Fever now,” she said.

Fans like Malerie Grossman, who received a signed pair of Clark’s shoes, continue to celebrate her achievements. Meanwhile, the basketball world watches as Clark cements her legacy both on and off the court.
