SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly Mustangs will host the CSU Fullerton Titans in a significant Big West Conference matchup on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at 9:00 PM ET. Both teams seek critical victories to improve their standing as the season progresses.
Cal Poly’s graduate guard Owen Koonce has emerged as a standout player this season, currently ranking among the top NCAA players in free throw percentage. His consistent performance has been a key element of the Mustangs’ game strategy. In addition to Koonce, graduate guard Jarred Hyder has contributed significantly, delivering high-scoring games and showcasing impressive three-point shooting throughout the season.
“We are focused on building from our recent performances,” said Cal Poly head coach Mike DeGeorge, who aims to sustain momentum after taking over the team earlier this season. “It’s crucial that our individual skill sets translate into team success, especially in high-pressure situations.”
Despite individual accomplishments, the Mustangs face challenges with overall team consistency. They average 56.1 points per game, ranking 338th in college basketball, while their opponents score an average of 60.2 points, placing them 88th in the same category. This scoring differential highlights an ongoing struggle that needs addressing if they are to contend for a playoff spot.
The Titans, currently holding a record of 5-18, also underscored their need for improved performance following a recent loss to UC Davis, where they fell 71-54. Aaliyah Stanton led CSU Fullerton with 12 points in that game.
“Each game we learn more about ourselves,” said Titans’ coach, whose team has fought through a challenging season. “We need to focus on execution and make the best of the opportunities we have left.”
Looking at the numbers, Cal Poly has been less effective recently, averaging only 53.6 points over their last ten games. Meanwhile, CSU Fullerton has been outscored by an average of 3.5 points per game, indicating both teams are seeking solutions as the season wears on.
In their last home game, the Mustangs scored 61 points, which is nine points more than they average during road games. This suggests a potential for higher scoring in their home venue, the Robert A. Mott Athletics Center, a fact the Mustangs hope will give them an edge against the Titans.
As the teams prepare for the matchup, the highlight remains on maximizing standout performances to foster team cohesion and strategic execution. With strong individual play catalyzing their efforts, both Cal Poly and CSU Fullerton look ahead to an important contest that could turn the tide for their season.
