Calgary Flames Edge Los Angeles Kings 2-1 in Tight NHL Matchup
The Calgary Flames secured a narrow 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in a hard-fought NHL matchup at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday, January 11, 2025. The game, attended by a packed crowd, saw the Flames capitalize on a power-play goal in the third period to seal the win.
The Kings opened the scoring early in the first period with a goal from defenseman Jacob Moverare, his first of the season, at the 6:19 mark. Calgary responded in the second period when rookie Matt Coronato netted his 10th goal of the season, assisted by Blake Coleman, tying the game at 1-1.
The decisive moment came in the third period when Jonathan Huberdeau scored his 18th goal of the season on a power play, with assists from Coronato and Nazem Kadri. The Flames’ defense held strong, limiting the Kings to just 15 shots on goal, while Calgary’s goaltender Dustin Wolf made 31 saves to secure the win.
Calgary’s head coach praised the team’s resilience, stating, ‘We knew it was going to be a tight game, and the guys stepped up when it mattered most. Huberdeau’s power-play goal was a game-changer.’
The Kings, despite the loss, showed flashes of brilliance, particularly from their top line of Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe. However, their inability to convert on three power-play opportunities proved costly. ‘We had our chances, but we couldn’t capitalize,’ said Kings coach Todd McLellan. ‘We’ll regroup and focus on the next game.’
The Flames improved their record to 25-15-5, while the Kings fell to 22-18-6. Both teams will continue their playoff push as the NHL season progresses.
