Cameron Norrie Upsets Frances Tiafoe in Wimbledon Second Round

LONDON, England – American Frances Tiafoe, seeded 12th, was knocked out of the Wimbledon Championships on Wednesday after losing to Britain’s Cameron Norrie in a four-set match. Tiafoe was defeated 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 in the second round at the All England Club.
This defeat marks Tiafoe’s fourth second-round exit in seven major tournaments since the beginning of 2024. Wimbledon remains the only Grand Slam where he has not reached at least the quarterfinals, falling short in the third or fourth rounds over the past few years. His last early exit before the third round was in 2019.
Tiafoe started strong, taking the first set, but Norrie turned the match around, gaining momentum after the second set. Norrie, who had never previously beaten a top-20 player at Wimbledon, quickly established control, eventually breaking Tiafoe’s serve for the lead in the final set.
Before the beginning of the fourth set, Tiafoe took a bathroom break, hoping to regroup. However, Norrie’s energy and consistency overwhelmed Tiafoe, leading to his victory.
In other matches, American Jenson Brooksby also lost in the second round, falling to Brazilian João Fonseca, the youngest competitor in the tournament, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
The day was marked by a series of upsets, as four of the top ten women’s seeds were eliminated in the first round, setting a record for the most seeded players knocked out at a Grand Slam in 25 years.
With the tournament experiencing rain delays and temperature drops throughout the day, the scene at Wimbledon was a mixture of excitement and disappointment for many fans.
