Team Canada has made history by winning a silver medal in women’s rugby sevens at the Paris Olympics. This is the best result Canada has ever achieved in this event.

In the gold medal match on Tuesday, Canada faced off against the powerhouse New Zealand but fell short with a score of 19-12.

New Zealand, the defending champions from Tokyo 2020 and silver medalists from Rio 2016, was expected to put up a strong fight. Canada advanced to the final after impressive victories earlier in the tournament.

The Canadian players were filled with pride while singing O Canada before the match at the iconic Stade de France. However, New Zealand struck early with Risi Pouri-Lane scoring a try within the first two minutes.

Canada gained momentum when they took advantage of a yellow card given to New Zealand’s Portia Woodman-Wickliffe. With the player advantage, Canada’s Chloe Daniels scored and converted, bringing the score to 7-7.

Right at the end of the first half, Alysha Corrigan made a brilliant interception and dashed in for another try. Canada went into halftime leading 12-7.

But New Zealand wasn’t finished yet; they quickly responded in the second half. Michaela Blyde scored a try that, along with Tyla King’s conversion, put New Zealand back in the lead at 14-12.

Canada continued to show their fighting spirit, putting pressure on New Zealand’s defense. However, in a nail-biting finish, Stacey Waaka scored another unconverted try, sealing the match at 19-12.

<pEarlier in the tournament, Canada had lost to New Zealand 33-7 during the pool matches but managed to beat teams like Fiji, China, France, and Australia to reach the final.

<pBefore this silver medal, Canada’s best result was bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
