The Canadian women’s soccer team is celebrating after a thrilling 2-1 victory against France, keeping their Olympic dreams alive.

Vanessa Gilles was the star of the night, scoring the winning goal in the 12th minute of injury time at Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium. After a shot from Jordyn Huitema was saved, Gilles jumped on the rebound and sent it crashing into the net, sealing the victory and quieting the home crowd.

Before Gilles’ heroics, the French team struck first with a goal from Marie-Antoinette Katoto in the 42nd minute. However, captain Jessie Fleming equalized for Canada in the 58th minute, keeping their hopes alive.

This victory comes after Canada had narrowly beaten New Zealand 2-1 in their tournament opener, but that joy was bittersweet as FIFA later penalized them with a six-point deduction due to a drone spying incident involving their coaching staff.

Despite this major setback, the team came together to deliver an impressive performance against the home team. The game was filled with energy as both teams fought hard for the crucial win.

With their next challenge against Colombia on the horizon, the Canadian team is hopeful to secure another win, aiming for a strong finish in the group stage.
