Canadian Newman Shines with Bronze in Women’s Pole Vault at Paris 2024
At her third Olympic Games, Canadian pole vaulter, Newman, not only made her first Olympic final but also brought home a bronze medal for Team Canada in the women’s pole vault.
The crowd was instantly on her side as she struck a pose during her introduction, setting the stage for a memorable performance.
Newman cleared an impressive 4.85 meters, setting a new Canadian record in the process. This new mark surpassed her previous record of 4.82 meters.
Before Newman’s remarkable achievement, the highest place a Canadian woman had reached in the Olympic Games was sixth, achieved by another athlete.
Newman became Canada’s first pole vault medallist in 112 years, following two previous bronze medals won by men in pole vault events, the last being back in Stockholm 1912.
On the podium alongside her were Nina Kennedy from Australia, who took home the gold medal with a jump of 4.90 meters, and American athlete Katie Moon, who also cleared 4.85 meters but had fewer missed attempts.
Newman had earlier cleared 4.55 meters to qualify for the final, a significant accomplishment considering she had to drop out of the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championship due to an ankle injury.
