Washington Capitals Alex Ovechkin Celebration Goal

NEW YORK, New York, USA — Alex Ovechkin celebrated his career goal number 885 after scoring in the third period, leading the Washington Capitals to a thrilling 3-2 victory against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on March 5, 2025.

The Capitals now boast 40 wins and 88 points this season, matching their total wins from last year with 20 games remaining. The game against the Rangers, known for its intensity, was crucial for the Capitals following a string of disappointing results.

After Pierre-Luc Dubois opened the scoring for the Rangers, the Capitals found themselves trailing 2-1 late into the game. Ovechkin tied the match with his 32nd goal of the season, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra period, Tom Wilson became the hero, scoring the game-winning goal. During a two-on-one rush, Wilson and Dylan Strome executed a brilliantly timed play against Rangers defenseman Braden Schneider. Strome, showing remarkable patience, set up Wilson for a deflected shot that beat goaltender Igor Shesterkin.

“It was an incredible play by Strome. He held it just long enough, and I was in the right place at the right time,” Wilson said post-game.

The Capitals faced a challenge as they accrued their league-leading 11th “Too Many Men” penalty this season, leaving head coach Spencer Carbery frustrated. “This trend has to stop. We need to be smarter,” Carbery said regarding the penalty issues that have plagued the team.

The Capitals’ recent success comes as they aim to clinch a playoff spot, proving their resilience with impressive performances, particularly in high-pressure situations.

“We’re getting better every game. The chemistry on this team is building,” Ovechkin commented on their recent form.
