Capitals Seek Consistency in Third Periods Against Canadiens

ARLINGTON, Va. — The Washington Capitals are looking to maintain their intensity in the third period as they lead the Montreal Canadiens 2-0 in their Eastern Conference First Round series.
Game 3 is set for Friday at 7 p.m. ET at Bell Centre. The Capitals have played well for two periods but have struggled to finish games, as evident in their recent overtime win and narrow victory where they were heavily outshot in the last period.
“A lot through the series and through the playoffs is momentum,” Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said Thursday, emphasizing the importance of holding onto leads and stifling the opposition’s momentum.
Despite their leading position in the series, the Capitals have shown vulnerability in the third periods. Their third period performance was particularly concerning after losing a 2-0 lead in Game 1, only to win in overtime, and relying on their goaltender in Game 2 to secure a 3-1 win.
Washington outshot Montreal in the first two periods 50-33, but the Canadiens roared back in the third, outshooting the Capitals 28-12. This imbalance highlights the necessity for Washington to improve their play as Montreal ramps up their intensity while fighting for a comeback.
Capitals defenseman noted the importance of maintaining the aggressive style that has worked in their favor thus far. “We just can’t sit back. I think we just need to continue to play the way we were the first two periods,” he said.
Goalie Logan Thompson has been instrumental for the Capitals, providing strong performances and keeping them competitive, especially as he transitions back into playoff action after an upper-body injury. Thompson made 25 saves in Game 2, and his composure has been acknowledged by teammates as critical to the team’s success.
“He’s been huge for us all season,” said Pierre-Luc Dubois, praising Thompson’s vital role as they navigate this playoff series.
Thompson’s performances take on added significance with the upcoming games at Bell Centre, where the Canadiens will have the advantage of their passionate home crowd. Capitals players are prepared for the challenge, focused on keeping their offensive momentum while improving their defensive resilience.
As they prepare for Game 3, the Capitals understand that playoffs are defined by the ability to adapt under pressure. Thompson’s return and their third-period inconsistencies will be a key focus if they hope to extend their playoff lead.
