Cardinals Face Tough Decisions on Key Free Agents Ahead of 2025 Season
GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Arizona Cardinals are entering a pivotal offseason as they evaluate which of their 26 free agents to re-sign ahead of the 2025 NFL season. With the new league year set to begin on March 12, General Manager Monti Ossenfort faces critical decisions to maintain the team’s momentum under head coach Jonathan Gannon.
The Cardinals have already secured extensions for two key players, but the bulk of their free agents remain unsigned. While the team is not losing any star players, several contributors on defense and special teams could depart if agreements aren’t reached. Among the notable names are linebacker Kyzir White, edge rusher Dennis Gardeck, and kicker Matt Prater.
White, a seven-year veteran, emerged as a defensive leader in 2024, recording a career-high 137 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and an interception. Despite his struggles in pass coverage, his grit and familiarity with Gannon’s system make him a near-essential re-signing. “Kyzir brought a toughness to our defense that we’ve needed for years,” said one team insider. “He’s not perfect, but he’s a glue guy.”
Gardeck, a fan favorite, was the Cardinals’ most consistent pass rusher before tearing his ACL in Week 7. His return hinges on his recovery, but his leadership and production (three sacks in seven games) make him a valuable rotational piece. “Dennis is the heart of this defense,” said defensive coordinator Nick Rallis. “We’d love to have him back if he’s healthy.”
On special teams, the Cardinals face a decision on Prater, who missed most of the season with a knee injury. At 40, his future is uncertain, especially with 25-year-old kicker Ryland stepping up in his absence. Ryland made 28 of 32 field goal attempts in 2024, including all four from 50-plus yards.
Other defensive free agents include L.J. Collier, who posted career highs in tackles (29) and sacks (3.5), and Baron Browning, a versatile edge rusher acquired via trade midseason. Collier, a former first-round pick, has shown flashes of potential, while Browning’s youth (he turns 26 in February) makes him an intriguing long-term option.
The Cardinals also have decisions to make on role players like Roy Lopez, Aaron Brewer, and Julian Okwara. Lopez and Brewer provided depth in the defensive line and long-snapper positions, respectively, while Okwara showed promise as a hybrid edge rusher.
With significant cap space available, the Cardinals have the flexibility to make splash moves in free agency. However, retaining key contributors like White and Gardeck could be crucial to building on the progress made in Gannon’s second year. “We’ve got a solid foundation,” said Ossenfort. “Now it’s about making the right moves to take the next step.”
