Carlos Alcaraz Withdraws from Shanghai Masters After Japan Open Win

Tokyo, Japan — Carlos Alcaraz solidified his position as the world No. 1 by defeating Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 at the Japan Open on Tuesday. However, shortly after his victory, Alcaraz announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Shanghai Masters to focus on his recovery.
Alcaraz, 21, is looking to secure the year-end top spot for the first time in his career. His win in Tokyo ensured that fellow competitor Jannik Sinner could not close the gap during the Japan Open, which awards 500 points to the winner. Alcaraz leads Sinner by 2,590 points in the race for the year-end title.
“It’s been my best season so far without a doubt. Eight titles, 10 finals… That shows how hard I’ve worked just to be able to experience these moments and accomplish my goals,” Alcaraz said in his victory speech.
After clinching the Japan Open trophy, Alcaraz expressed disappointment over his decision to withdraw from Shanghai due to physical issues. He posted on Instagram, “I was really looking forward to playing in front of the amazing fans in Shanghai again. I hope to be back soon and see my Chinese fans next year.”
During the final against Fritz, Alcaraz maintained control of the match, capitalizing on Fritz’s injury-managed performance. Fritz struggled with his left thigh and required medical attention during the match. Alcaraz’s only setback came from disagreements with the umpire about the automatic shot clock.
The match marked Alcaraz’s ninth consecutive final, adding to his eighth title of the year and boosting his record to 67 wins in 2025, more than any other player on the ATP Tour.
As he looks forward, Alcaraz’s next potential return might be at the Vienna or Basel tournaments later in the season, but the decision will depend on his recovery process. He is now tasked with monitoring Sinner’s progression in the China Open final to be held on Wednesday.
Reflecting on his journey this season, Alcaraz emphasized the importance of his support team. “Even when I got injured, you took care of me. I’m really grateful,” he remarked during his post-match address, emphasizing the role of his team in his success.
