Carlos Mendoza on Jeff McNeil’s Return and Mets’ NLCS Run
New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza has been instrumental in the team’s remarkable run in the 2024 postseason, and one of the key factors in their success is the return of utility player Jeff McNeil. McNeil, who had been on the injured list since early September with a fractured right wrist, was included in the Mets’ 26-man roster for their National League Championship Series (NLCS) matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Mendoza emphasized the significance of McNeil’s return, highlighting his versatility and contributions to the team. “He’s been a huge part of this team the whole year. Obviously, with him being down the past six weeks or so, we missed him,” Mendoza said. He praised McNeil’s ability to play both in the infield and the outfield, as well as his left-handed hitting, which adds depth to the Mets’ lineup.
McNeil, who grew up as a Dodgers fan but has been with the Mets his entire professional career, expressed his excitement about being back on the roster. Despite a tumultuous season where he slashed just .238/.308/.384 with 12 home runs and 44 RBI, McNeil is eager to contribute in the playoffs. He mentioned that his role could change daily, with potential time in the outfield and as a left-handed pinch-hitter against the right-handed heavy Dodgers lineup.
Mendoza also reflected on the team’s journey, particularly from a point in June when they were 11 games under .500. He credited the team’s mentality of focusing on one day at a time and the collective effort from players, coaches, support staff, and the front office for their turnaround. Mendoza emphasized the importance of preparation and player development in their success.
