Carlton Claims Victory Over North Melbourne as Brisbane and Fremantle Shine in AFL Round 19
The Carlton Football Club fought hard to secure a 19-point victory over North Melbourne in a thrilling clash at Docklands, marking an essential win that places them in second position on the AFL ladder. The match showcased the talent of Charlie Curnow, who was instrumental in the team’s performance, netting four goals, helping the Blues achieve a final score of 16.11 (107) to 14.4 (88).
Carlton, who entered the match after a two-game losing streak, managed to regain their footing as they put up a strong defense against a spirited North Melbourne side. Curnow’s performance stood out, particularly during a lively third quarter where he contributed three goals, further intensifying his rivalry with Griffin Logue, who was making his return to the field after a lengthy period out due to a knee injury.
Sam Walsh, who had been sidelined at the start of the season due to a back issue, was also prominent, registering 25 disposals despite looking sore from several heavy challenges. In support, captain Patrick Cripps contributed significantly, achieving 29 disposals and nine clearances. George Hewett provided a valuable partnership in midfield with 22 disposals and eight clearances. Additionally, small forwards Matt Owies and Jesse Motlop showcased their skills by each kicking three goals during the match.
North Melbourne displayed resilience as they began the match brightly, with Harry Sheezel impressing, managing 34 disposals and two goals, while teammates Charlie Comben and Paul Curtis also contributed with three goals each. Ruckman Todd Xerri notably dominated the ground, recording 11 clearances and 43 hit-outs, showcasing his skills throughout the contest.
The match commenced with North Melbourne seizing the initiative, with Sheezel impressively scoring the first goal. Assisted by Xerri and Jy Simpkin, they controlled the clearance, while Tom De Koning was initially sent to the Blues’ change room for an assessment due to a foot issue.
Following a two-goal burst from Comben in the second quarter, North Melbourne led by as much as 18 points, but Carlton’s Motlop executed two quick goals to keep his side in contention. After Comben successfully kicked a goal just before the halftime siren, North retained an 11-point advantage at the interval.
The Kangaroos extended their lead to 17 points shortly after the resumption. However, the Blues responded dynamically, scoring five successive goals to seize the lead. This proved pivotal, and even though North Melbourne managed to keep the pressure, they could not reclaim control as Carlton kept their offense steady, clinching the win.
Meanwhile, Fremantle continued their strong form with a dominant 50-point triumph over Melbourne at Perth Stadium, which raised them into the top four for the first time this season. The match result, concluding at 17.14 (116) to 10.6 (66), also inflicted further pain on a beleaguered Melbourne, whose playoff prospects appear increasingly dim.
However, Fremantle’s triumph wasn’t without concern as skipper Alex Pearce sustained a fresh injury to his left arm, having already endured a fracture earlier in the season. Pearce was taken off in the third quarter and is set to undergo scans to examine the severity of his injury. His absence could pose challenges for the club as they head into the latter stages of the competition.
Fremantle held an overwhelming advantage in clearances, notably boasting a staggering 24-3 lead at halftime, with Andrew Brayshaw powering through the midfield with 41 disposals, while Caleb Serong and Hayden Young also made their marks. The match marked a stark reminder for Melbourne, who now confront a desperate battle for finals qualification.
In another gripping encounter, Brisbane Lions managed to secure a narrow two-point win over ladder leaders Sydney at the Gabba, extending their winning streak to seven matches. The match was intense, featuring multiple lead changes, but it was Callum Ah Chee‘s goal with less than three minutes remaining that sealed the hard-fought victory for the Lions, concluding at 11.13 (79) to 11.11 (77).
Sydney, hampered by injuries to key players Dane Rampe and Tom Papley during the second quarter, could not withstand Brisbane’s surge in the final term. Brisbane’s Hugh McCluggage showcased his brilliance with three goals, complementing Joe Daniher‘s three first-quarter goals as the Lions seized an early lead.
Despite Sydney’s efforts to rally, highlighted by standout performances from Will Hayward and Errol Gulden, they ultimately fell short, unable to recover from Brisbane’s late surge. The climax was breathless, with the lead swapping between teams before Brisbane managed to hold on for victory.
As Round 19 of the AFL comes to close, the results have solidified Carlton’s position and demonstrated newfound excitement as the playoffs draw near. With the intensity of competition heating up, fans are left eager for Round 20, where the battle for finals positions will continue unabated.
