Carolina Panthers Release Veteran Cornerback During Season

Carolina Panthers Midseason Release Hill

On October 18th, 2024, it was announced that veteran cornerback Troy Hill is set to enter mid-season free agency following his release by the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers, with a current record of 1-5, are opting to focus on their younger players in the secondary, leading to the decision to release Hill and free up playing time.

Hill’s contractual agreement with the Panthers was on track to expire at the end of the season. However, his release means he is now available to interested teams without the need for a trade. Since this move was made before the trade deadline, Hill will not be subject to waivers, allowing immediate negotiations for his new team.

The 33-year-old rejoined defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero at the Panthers last August, after previously working together during their tenure at the Rams. In 2023, Hill participated in 50% of the defensive snaps, accumulating 48 tackles, six pass deflections, and one interception. This output secured his position in Carolina for the season, though he signed a near veteran minimum contract.

Despite this, Hill will now seek to join another roster midway through the campaign, generating some salary cap savings for the Panthers along with equivalent dead money. Previously, Hill played on the outside but has more recently been utilized in the slot, which could increase his attractiveness to other teams. However, Hill has struggled in coverage, falling outside the top 55 in terms of cornerback performance based on PFF grading over the past three seasons.

Given his extensive experience that includes 60 career starts, Hill could provide valuable secondary depth for a team in playoff contention. The Panthers, meanwhile, have faced challenges defensively, specifically against the pass, conceding an average of 226 yards per game, placing them 26th in the NFL rankings.

This decision paves the way for increased responsibilities for younger Panthers players, such as a fifth-round rookie, to step into larger roles in the secondary. The extent of interest in Hill from other NFL teams remains to be seen as he looks to continue his career elsewhere.
