MELBOURNE, Australia — Former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki revealed she will not compete in the 2025 Australian Open due to ongoing physical struggles, including her battle with rheumatoid arthritis. The 34-year-old Danish tennis star, who made a comeback in 2023 after a three-year hiatus, cited her health as the primary reason for her absence from the tournament.

Wozniacki, who won her only Grand Slam title at the 2018 Australian Open, has been a fan favorite at Melbourne Park. However, she told Eurosport that her body was not ready for the rigors of competition. “My body was not feeling great. When I started pre-season training, I was struggling with my body a little bit,” she said. “I have rheumatoid arthritis, so it’s been an ongoing battle, but I am hoping with a little break I will be back again soon.”

The former champion has not played since the 2024 U.S. Open, where she reached the fourth round before losing to Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia in a hard-fought three-set match. Wozniacki defeated unseeded players Nao Hibino, Renata Zarazúa, and Jessika Ponchet to advance to the last 16, but Haddad Maia ultimately prevailed 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Wozniacki’s absence from the Australian Open marks a significant moment for the tournament, which she has described as the site of her greatest career achievement. Her 2018 victory over Romania’s Simona Halep in a thrilling three-set final remains a highlight of her career.

When asked about her future in tennis, Wozniacki expressed hope but acknowledged uncertainty. “I hope so,” she said when questioned about a potential return this season. Her comments have left fans wondering whether the former champion will continue her career or step away from the sport permanently.

Wozniacki’s comeback in 2023, after giving birth to two children during her hiatus, saw her climb back into the top 70 rankings. She reached the last 16 in two tournaments during her return, showcasing her resilience and determination. However, her ongoing health challenges have once again put her career in question.

As the 2025 Australian Open progresses without one of its most beloved champions, fans and fellow players alike will be watching closely for updates on Wozniacki’s condition and potential return to the court.
