DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Helio Castroneves, a four-time Indianapolis 500 champion, will make his NASCAR Cup Series debut as the 41st entry in the Daytona 500 this Sunday, following a crash during Thursday’s qualifying races. A new NASCAR provision allows a “world-class driver” like Castroneves to secure a spot, despite not qualifying on speed.

The Brazilian driver crashed on Lap 14 of the first Duel qualifying race held at Daytona International Speedway, suffering significant damage to his No. 91 Chevrolet after being caught in a multi-car wreck initiated by Chandler Smith. “Unfortunately, we’re going to have to take the provisional,” Castroneves remarked post-accident. “That’s not what we wanted, but we will. And, in the end, we have more to learn.”

Despite his crash, Castroneves’ status as a prominent figure in racing aided him in utilizing the exemption. “I should have brought it down on the warmup lane,” he said, reflecting on his driving errors. “But the good news is hopefully the guys are going to be able to fix the car. I learned so much, small details that folks don’t understand.”

Several established NASCAR drivers voiced their criticisms regarding the new provision. Jimmie Johnson expressed his discontent with NASCAR’s decision, stating, “I should have been an eligible candidate for that provisional.” Johnson and 2017 champion Martin Truex Jr. were especially frustrated to find out about the rule change after it had been finalized within the charter agreements. “Evidently, it was buried in the charter agreement that was pushed out,” Johnson said.

The Daytona 500 also saw plenty of action as Bubba Wallace won the first of the two qualifying races, adding further excitement to this year’s competition. “I’ve wanted one of these Duel wins for so long,” said Wallace after his victory, showing the significance of the event in the lead-up to the Daytona 500.

Additionally, Austin Cindric, driving for Team Penske, clinched victory in the second qualifying race after a contested finish that left many surprised. Drivers who finish lower than Castroneves in the Sunday race will see their positions adjusted upward, emphasizing the level of scrutiny surrounding the new rule. With a large field of competitors anticipated, the Daytona 500 is set to be bigger than it has been in years.

“We’re going to have to take the provisional,” Castroneves reiterated, bracing for the unusually large field. “I was having a good time. The good news is hopefully the guys will be able to fix the car. I learned so much from this experience.”
