Cavaliers Hire Hometown Star Jawad Williams as Assistant Coach

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Cavaliers have made an addition to their coaching staff by hiring Jawad Williams, a native of the city and former Cavalier player. The announcement comes during an offseason marked by several coaching departures.
Williams, who gained recognition as a standout player at St. Edward High School and played collegiately at the University of North Carolina, is set to join head coach Kenny Atkinson‘s team. After working as an assistant and director of player development in Japan and for the Sacramento Kings, Williams is returning home to continue his career in coaching.
The Cavaliers lost four assistant coaches this offseason, prompting the search for new talent. Williams was identified as a prime candidate due to his deep local ties and player development experience, which aligns with the team’s emphasis on nurturing young talent.
Williams’s journey in basketball took him across the globe after he went undrafted in 2005. He played professionally in various leagues, bringing a wealth of international experience back to the Cavaliers. As he transitions into this coaching role, his goal is to enhance the team’s player development program.
“I’m excited to come back to Cleveland and contribute to the team that helped shape my career,” said Williams. “I hope to share my experiences and help these young players reach their full potential.”
The Cavaliers have a strong commitment to local talent, and Williams’s return reflects this goal. His understanding of the Cleveland community and its basketball history adds an important layer to the organization. Fans are eager to see how Williams will bridge the team’s storied past with its ambitions for the future.
Head coach Kenny Atkinson highlighted Williams’s coaching acumen and ability to connect with players. “Jawad brings unique insights that will help us develop our young roster,” Atkinson stated. “His background and experience will be invaluable.”
As the upcoming season approaches, Cavaliers fans are optimistic about holding on to their local hero, and many look forward to seeing the positive impact Williams is expected to make.
