Cavs’ Donovan Mitchell Injured, Ejected Players Clash in Game 4

INDIANAPOLIS — The Cleveland Cavaliers faced a significant setback during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Sunday when star guard Donovan Mitchell left the game due to a left ankle injury. The Cavaliers ultimately lost the game 129-109, falling behind in the series 3-1.
Mitchell, who had been shining throughout the playoffs, was on track for another solid performance before his injury. He played just 20 minutes in the first half, scoring 12 points but shooting only 3 of 11 from the field. His absence in the second half left a substantial gap for the Cavaliers.
Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson shared that Mitchell would undergo an MRI on Monday to assess the injury. “I have no idea about his availability for Game 5 on Tuesday,” Atkinson said after the game.
Meanwhile, tensions flared on the court after a series of aggressive plays. Indiana Pacers guard Bennedict Mathurin was ejected in the first quarter after striking Cavs forward A.J. Hunter with a closed fist. Hunter retaliated by shoving Mathurin to the floor, leading to an escalation that included technical fouls for both players, while Pacers center Myles Turner was also involved in the incident.
Official John Goble clarified the situation post-game, stating, “That contact was deemed to be unnecessary and excessive.” Despite his aggressive play, Mathurin had minimal impact on the game, registering only one minute of play without any points.
Pacers coach Rick Carlisle addressed the incident, recognizing it as a crucial learning opportunity for Mathurin. “Whatever happened, happened. He will accept the ejection and whatever else happens from it. We just got to move forward,” Carlisle said.
The team dynamics and physicality of playoff basketball continue to create intense moments. As the series progresses, both teams will need to adapt to the challenges posed by injuries and conflicts on the court.
