Cayden Primeau Montreal Canadiens Goalie

MONTREAL — Cayden Primeau, a 25-year-old goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens, rushed to the Bell Centre on Friday night after starting goalie Samuel Montembeault was injured during a playoff game against the Washington Capitals. Primeau was watching Game 3 in Laval when he noticed his teammate leave the ice in distress.

After receiving a call from Laval coach Pascal Vincent, Primeau quickly packed his gear and made the 20-30 minute drive to Bell Centre, arriving just in time for the third period. “I was just excited to be here and see the atmosphere,” Primeau said.

Montembeault is currently day-to-day with an undisclosed injury, which leaves Jakub Dobes starting in goal for Game 4 on Sunday evening. “I’m not even sure I would have been eligible to play,” Primeau added. Despite not dressing for Game 3, he expressed gratitude for being part of the team.

Primeau had a stellar season in the American Hockey League (AHL), boasting a 1.96 goals-against average and leading Laval to a strong finish. His efforts didn’t go unnoticed, as he was awarded the Harry “Hap” Holmes Memorial Award for allowing the fewest goals per game.

Montreal coach Martin St. Louis praised Primeau’s development this season, saying, “We’re happy to have him back. After what he’s done, I feel very good.” Primeau’s strong performance led to his recall as a backup for Dobes.

Meanwhile, Capitals’ goalie Logan Thompson is also day to day after being injured during Game 3. He was on the ice for the team’s morning skate but his availability will be assessed before the game.

“He’s been a key part of this team all year long,” said Capitals forward Craig Smith about Thompson. In the event Thompson cannot play, Charlie Lindgren will be the starter for Washington.
