OAKMONT, Pa. — Justin Hastings from the Cayman Islands has made his mark at the U.S. Open, becoming the tournament’s low amateur. On Sunday, Hastings will play in his first major championship at Oakmont, where he currently stands at nine-over par and tied for 45th place.

Hastings, a 21-year-old who has just completed his senior season at San Diego State University, is the only amateur to make the cut. Thus far, he has already secured a medal for his achievements this weekend, regardless of his performance on Sunday.

Entering the competition as a longshot, Hastings was overshadowed by more renowned players, including 2024 U.S. Amateur champion Noah Kent. He has little experience on this grand stage, having missed the cut at his only previous major, the Masters in April.

Yet, he has embraced the underdog role throughout his life. Growing up in the Cayman Islands, a British overseas territory, Hastings remains focused amid what many consider the toughest golf course in the world. “There are a few pros who have never heard of [the Cayman Islands],” Hastings remarked. “It’s always a funny one.”

Hastings honed his skills at the North Sound Golf Club, the only 18-hole course in the Caymans. “There’s only one golf course,” he said. His coach Tim has been instrumental in his development since he was five years old.

Hastings qualified for the U.S. Open by winning a local qualifier and will take this accomplishment with him into the professional realm as he plans to turn pro after Portrush, aiming for status on the PGA Tour Americas.

Back home in Grand Cayman, the local golf scene is buzzing with excitement as Hastings prepares for his final round, where he is anticipated to participate in several televised interviews. “Oh, yeah, yeah,” Hastings said, reflecting on his media spotlight. “That’s a first.”

The North Sound Golf Club will be eagerly awaiting his return, planning a trophy ceremony for their hometown hero later in the evening on Sunday.
